How we compareTerms, spreads and limits

At each term every bank gives one offer: its best advertised rate for that exact term. Terms are spaced by the square root of their length, so the short end has room. Deposits use the balance you pick; term deposits pay interest at maturity up to one year and yearly after it, or monthly if you pick that. "No term" is a savings account at call (base rate, paid monthly, no bonus or special-purpose account) on the deposit side and the variable rate on the loan side. Home loans are owner-occupier, principal and interest, $500,000 at the LVR you pick. A home-loan rate published with no LVR range counts at every LVR; a package-only rate is left out, so a bank can publish fixed rates that are not drawn here.

No term: every bank is a dot. The cloud above the dots covers the other banks' 10th to 90th percentile, shaped by how many of them sit at each rate and brighter over their middle half (25th to 75th percentile); the dashed tick is their median, and the bar on the line is the bank's gap to it. By term: the band is the other banks' 10th to 90th percentile at each term, brighter over their middle half, and the dashed line is their median. The curve shows the market's standard terms (1, 3, 6 and 9 months, 1 year, 18 months, then whole years) that at least eight banks offer: odd months come from a different set of banks, so their medians jump about. The table has every term. The bank's curve joins only the terms it offers; the gap to the median is shaded mint where it is above and hatched blue where it is below.

The gap is the bank minus the median of the other banks: on deposits a positive gap means it pays more, on home loans that it charges more. Brands can share a funder, and some lenders sell only through brokers. Fees, approval and negotiated rates still matter.
